Start-Up Loan Documents Checklist for Canada
Last updated October 9, 2026
Collecting documents is where most applications stall, so start there. Lenders and programs set their own lists, so use the funder's checklist first. This one covers what most ask for.
Identity and status
- Government photo ID.
- Proof of residency or immigration status, if asked.
Your finances
- Personal credit report: you can request your own from Equifax and TransUnion.
- Personal net worth statement: assets minus debts, on one page.
- Recent personal tax returns and Notices of Assessment from CRA.
- Three to six months of bank statements, if requested.
The business
- Business registration or incorporation documents.
- CRA business number and GST/HST number, if registered.
- Corporate tax returns, if the company is more than a year old. File anything overdue before applying.
- Lease or proof of premises, and an insurance quote.
The plan
- A business plan in the order lenders read it: summary, customers, competition, marketing, operations, team, financials, funding request, risks.
- A monthly cash-flow projection with start-up costs and funding sources.
- Written quotes for equipment, inventory or vehicles you want to finance.
- Evidence of demand: letters of intent, purchase orders, waitlists, existing sales.
The Canadian Startup Funding Kit ($39) includes a 36-month Excel model, a business plan template and this checklist. Confirm each funder's current requirements on its own site. No guarantee of approval.
