Ontario Job Grant: Training That Does Not Qualify
Last updated October 9, 2026
Before you pay for a course, check it is not on the excluded list. This page summarises the exclusions published on the province's page, ontario.ca/page/ontario-job-grant (updated August 31, 2026). Confirm there, because rules change.
Training that does not qualify
- Training you are legally required to provide. If the law makes you give it to employees, the grant does not pay for it.
- Vendor product training. Courses that teach you to use one company's product.
- Executive programs such as an MBA or CFA.
- Consulting and conferences.
- Training longer than one year. Training must also be completed within 52 weeks of its start date.
Providers that do qualify
The training has to come from an eligible third party: a college, university, district school board, registered career college, union-based training centre, sector council or industry association. Instructors need relevant credentials or recent experience.
Trainees who do not qualify
Owners, shareholders, board members and immediate family, contractors, volunteers, temporary foreign workers, and people already getting government training funding for similar training.
A quick test
Ask three questions of any course: Is it from an eligible provider type? Is it shorter than a year? Is it a skill, not a legal requirement or a vendor product? If any answer is no, check the program page before paying.
For a ten-question version of this test you can reuse, see the Ontario Job Grant DIY Pack ($29), or run your numbers in the free calculator. Independent; not affiliated with the Government of Ontario; no guarantee of funding.
